Agartala: April 17: The political debate surrounding the demand for the Roman script in Tripura has intensified, with senior Congress leader and former minister Sudip Roy Barman launching a scathing attack on both the BJP and Tipra Motha. Addressing a press conference at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan on Thursday, Barman criticized the ongoing movement for the Roman script, calling it a “scripted drama” designed to mislead the Tiprasa community.

He alleged that the emotions of the indigenous Tiprasa people were being exploited for political gain. “The people have been deceived,” Barman said, claiming that the BJP and Tipra Motha have orchestrated a “grand betrayal” that has left the community suffering. He also blamed the previous Left government for failing to resolve the Roman script issue and accused the BJP-led government of indulging in “dirty politics.”

Barman took aim at Tipra Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, stating that while the Tiprasa community once loved and trusted him, that trust has been misused. He argued that rights cannot be achieved through what he described as dramatic and emotionally charged movements.

Calling for a more democratic approach, Barman urged all political forces supporting the Roman script demand to unite and work within the democratic framework. He emphasized that only through collective, transparent efforts could genuine rights be secured.

Reaffirming the Congress party’s stance, he declared that the Congress will always support the legitimate demands of the tribal communities, regardless of political outcomes. “Whether we win or not, Congress will always stand with the Tiprasa and tribal people,” he concluded. Barman’s bold remarks have triggered fresh political discussions in the state, with the Roman script issue now becoming a major flashpoint in Tripura’s tribal politics.
