Agartala, June 2: In a major move to promote public health and cleaner tourist environments, the Sepahijala District Magistrate has officially declared three of the district’s most prominent tourist destinations as tobacco-restricted zones.

The locations now designated under this regulation include the Neermahal Tourist Complex in Melaghar, Kasba Kalibari Complex in Kamalasagar, and the Sepahijala Zoo in Bishalgarh.

The declaration, issued on May 30, is in line with the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA), 2003, and is part of the ongoing implementation of the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP). The aim is to ensure a tobacco-free environment, particularly in areas frequented by families, children, and tourists.

The use of tobacco products—both smoking and smokeless—is strictly prohibited in and around these premises. Furthermore, the sale of tobacco items is also banned within the designated zones.

Authorities stated that the initiative seeks to safeguard public health, maintain the cultural sanctity of the sites, and uphold cleanliness standards. All Sub-Divisional Magistrates, Block Development Officers, and law enforcement agencies have been instructed to ensure strict enforcement of the order.

Signage declaring the zones as tobacco-restricted will be installed at key entry and gathering points in each location. Regular enforcement drives and public awareness campaigns will also be conducted by the District NTCP Cell to ensure compliance.

Violations will attract penalties as per provisions laid down in COTPA, 2003. The order has come into immediate effect and is expected to significantly boost tobacco control efforts in the district.
