Agartala: May 24: A youth was seriously injured in a Border Security Force (BSF) firing incident near the Boxnagar border, reportedly during an attempted smuggling operation. The incident occurred on the night of June 23, 2025, near the 189 Gate area in Boxnagar West Para. The injured youth, identified as Rezaul Hossain, is currently receiving treatment at GB Hospital, Agartala.
According to sources, Rezaul Hossain, a resident of Ward No. 6 in Boxnagar and son of Abul Hossain, was allegedly involved in smuggling clothes across the India-Bangladesh border using a guide rope through a gap in the barbed wire fencing. The BSF, acting in response to suspicious activity, opened fire, hitting Rezaul in the back. He was initially taken to Boxnagar Primary Health Centre and later shifted to GB Hospital for advanced treatment.
Boxnagar and surrounding areas are known hotspots for cross-border smuggling, with many reports of illicit movement through unfenced stretches. The incident has sparked unrest and tension among residents in the West Para locality. The situation remains sensitive as locals express concerns over the increasing number of such confrontations.
In the wake of the shooting, the 49th Battalion of the BSF has intensified security measures in the area to prevent further smuggling attempts and maintain law and order.
While no official statement has been issued yet regarding the exact circumstances leading to the firing, the incident raises fresh questions about border security and the recurring issue of smuggling in the region. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further investigation is underway.
Locals demand stricter enforcement and better coordination between border agencies to prevent such dangerous encounters in the future.
