Agartala: In a major push to strengthen public security and expand higher education infrastructure, the Tripura Cabinet on Thursday approved the establishment of four new Government Railway Police Stations (GRPS), a new university at Bishalgarh, and the creation of hundreds of posts across key departments.
The four new GRPS units will be established at Bishramganj, Udaipur, Belonia and Sabroom, extending railway security coverage to important transit points across the state. The move is expected to enhance surveillance, improve response to security-related incidents and provide greater safety to railway passengers.
Tripura currently has 10 Government Railway Police Stations. With the addition of the four new units, the GRPS network in the state will increase to 14 stations.
To ensure adequate manpower for the newly sanctioned police stations, the Cabinet also approved the creation of 105 posts in different categories, including Sub-Inspectors, Assistant Sub-Inspectors and other personnel. The additional deployment is expected to strengthen policing along Tripura’s expanding railway network and improve security at stations and onboard trains.
In another significant decision, the Cabinet cleared a proposal to establish a new university at Bishalgarh in Sepahijala district. The institution is expected to expand access to higher education and create new opportunities for advanced studies and research for students from Bishalgarh and other parts of Tripura.
The government also approved the creation of 305 additional posts across departments. These include 200 posts of Assistant Professors, a step aimed at strengthening faculty availability in educational institutions and addressing existing manpower shortages.
The Cabinet decisions underline the state government’s focus on two important areas of development—public safety and education. While the expansion of the railway police network is expected to provide greater security to passengers amid growing rail connectivity, the proposed university and recruitment of teaching personnel are aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of higher education.
Together, the measures represent a broader effort to strengthen Tripura’s institutional infrastructure, improve public services and build skilled human resources to support the state’s long-term development.
