Agartala: August 01: Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Friday announced that the Fifteenth Finance Commission has sanctioned Rs. 450 crore for the overall development of Tripura’s healthcare services, marking a major milestone in the state’s ongoing efforts to improve medical infrastructure and accessibility.

Speaking at the 21st Foundation Day celebration of Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital, Dr. Saha also shared that an additional Rs. 30 crore has been sanctioned for setting up 100 new health centres across the state.

In a significant move towards advanced care, Manipur-based Shija Hospitals and Research Institute is set to develop a super-specialty hospital in Tripura, with land already allocated by the government.

Highlighting AGMC’s journey since its inception in 2005, the Chief Minister noted that 1,484 MBBS graduates have passed from the college so far—1,270 of them from Tripura. The posting of these graduates in rural areas has notably improved healthcare access in remote regions.

Dr. Saha stated that post-graduate (PG) education is now available in 20 departments at AGMC, with 234 students currently enrolled in MD/MS courses. Of the 89 PG seats, 50 percent are reserved for Tripura-based students. Around 391 students have completed PG studies in the past nine years.

He revealed plans to introduce super-specialty PG courses and initiate liver and heart transplants in collaboration with the Mohan Foundation, following the success of three kidney transplants.

The CM emphasized infrastructure upgrades in district hospitals and announced the establishment of a 100-bed Tertiary Eye Hospital near ILS Hospital, to be attached to AGMC.

He also warned against agent rackets misguiding patients and stressed skill development for healthcare professionals to ensure better service delivery.

Health Secretary Kiran Gitte and senior medical officials were present at the event.
