The tragic death of 23-year-old delivery worker Prasenjit Sarkar has sparked widespread outrage across Tripura, with citizens demanding swift action against those allegedly responsible for his public humiliation in Dharmanagar, North Tripura. Prasenjit was found hanging from a tree near his residence on Sunday morning, and preliminary indications suggest he may have taken the extreme step following trauma from a recent incident.

A video of the altercation—linked to a dispute over an online delivery—surfaced on Saturday, showing Prasenjit being verbally abused and allegedly forced to perform sit-ups while holding his ears, despite repeatedly apologising. The video went viral, triggering shock, anger, and intense criticism on social media.

Netizens condemned the act as “inhuman” and “deeply disturbing,” emphasising the mental stress faced by delivery workers who often operate under demanding conditions. Many pointed out that filming and circulating such a video constituted psychological harassment and public shaming, which could severely impact a person’s mental wellbeing.

Hashtags calling for Justice for Prasenjit trended widely, with the public demanding immediate arrests and strict punishment for those involved. Several users also urged authorities to take stronger measures to protect gig workers from abusive behaviour by customers.

In response, the victim’s family lodged a complaint at Dharmanagar police station, naming five individuals—Susmita Bhattacharjee, Sangeeta Bhattacharjee, Sourav Bhattacharjee, Meghadip Bhattacharjee and Piu Dhar—as the accused in the case. Police officials confirmed that an investigation is underway and efforts are on to track down the suspects, who are currently absconding.

As public anger continues to rise, pressure is mounting on the administration to conduct a fair, transparent, and time-bound probe. Citizens, civil groups and social media users alike have urged authorities to ensure that the case is not overlooked and that justice is delivered without delay.
