The Tripura Police has announced a rigorous enforcement drive to curb the rising trend of minors driving motorized vehicles, citing grave risks to road safety and public security. The initiative, launched under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (as amended), seeks to hold not only juvenile offenders but also their guardians and vehicle owners accountable for such violations.

In a press release issued on Friday by the Office of the Director General of Police, Agartala, authorities stressed that it is strictly illegal for individuals below 18 years of age to operate any motorized vehicle. The police highlighted that allowing minors to drive poses a serious threat to themselves as well as other road users, making stringent action necessary.

As per the provisions of the amended Act, any guardian or vehicle owner who permits a minor to drive will face severe consequences. Violators will be liable for a fine of up to ₹25,000. Additionally, the responsible adult may face imprisonment of up to three years, depending on the gravity of the offence. The punishment may also include the cancellation of the vehicle’s registration for a period of one year.

The Act also imposes long-term restrictions on juvenile offenders. If a minor is found operating a motor vehicle, they will be barred from obtaining a driving license until the age of 25. This measure aims to instill a strong sense of responsibility and discourage underage driving at its roots.

Tripura Police has appealed to all parents and guardians to ensure that minors do not get access to motor vehicles under any circumstances. The department emphasized that strict enforcement of road safety rules is crucial to preventing accidents, saving lives, and maintaining overall public safety across the state.
