Agartala, July 25: In a significant disciplinary action, the Higher Education Department of Tripura has suspended two Assistant Professors from government colleges under Tripura University over serious allegations of misconduct and malpractice.

Santanu Majumder, an Assistant Professor at Government Degree College, Kamalpur in Dhalai district, was suspended after being accused of inappropriate behavior with a female student on campus. A viral video allegedly captured the duo engaging in intimate acts within the college premises on July 21, prompting outrage and swift action.

According to a report submitted by the college principal, Majumder admitted his involvement, which was deemed a violation of professional ethics and institutional decorum. The suspension order, signed by Special Secretary Raval Hamendra Kumar, stated that Majumder’s actions damaged the sanctity of the educational environment and breached the dignity of the teaching profession.

Kamalpur College Principal Abhijit Sarkar confirmed that the college conducted an internal inquiry before forwarding the report to the department. Sources indicated that Majumder had allegedly been in an illicit relationship with the student for nearly two years.

In a separate case, Abhijit Nath, an Assistant Professor at Ramthakur College on the outskirts of Agartala, was also suspended for his alleged role in unauthorized student admissions for the 2025–26 academic year.

Following media reports, the Higher Education Department found 69 cases of irregular admissions. As per the preliminary findings, Nath was involved in gross violations of admission norms, including forgery and manipulation of official procedures.

Both suspension orders were issued by Special Secretary Raval Hamendra Kumar, citing the seriousness of the charges and calling for further inquiry into the respective incidents.

These developments have raised concerns over the state of discipline in academic institutions and prompted calls for stricter oversight and enforcement of professional conduct in higher education.
