Agartala, August 3: Tension gripped GB Pant Hospital in Agartala after two on-duty doctors were allegedly assaulted by the sons of a patient in the early hours of Saturday. The incident has triggered outrage among the medical fraternity over the lack of adequate security in the emergency ward.
The patient, identified as Bimal Sarkar, was admitted around 3 a.m. after consuming poison mixed with alcohol. He was immediately shifted to the emergency ward, where doctors began treatment without delay. On duty at the time were Dr. Litan Das, Dr. Avik Deb and Dr. Santanu Das.
According to hospital sources, Dr. Litan Das attended the patient and extended necessary care. After some time, the patient’s family called Dr. Das again. When he approached, a heated argument broke out. The situation turned violent as the patient’s sons, Tapan Sarkar and Papan Sarkar, allegedly abused and physically manhandled Dr. Das.
Hearing the commotion, Dr. Avik Deb rushed to intervene but was also subjected to verbal abuse and physical assault. The attack created chaos in the emergency ward, disrupting services and leaving doctors shaken.
Condemning the incident, Dr. Sishendu Dhar, Head of the Emergency Department, said, “Our doctors have been working tirelessly to provide the best care, but despite doing their duty, they faced violence and hooliganism.”
He further expressed disappointment over the inadequate response from the security personnel. “Neither the police officers posted for security nor the private guards took timely action. Even after more than 12 hours, no FIR was filed against the perpetrators,” Dr. Dhar alleged.
The incident has once again exposed the vulnerability of medical professionals and prompted demands for stronger security measures and strict action against those responsible.
