Agartala, June 2: Defying heavy rain, the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of BJP alliance partner Tipra Motha, launched a coordinated protest across Gomati district on Monday, demanding the immediate transfer of District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma over allegations of misbehavior with party founder and royal scion Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.
The epicenter of the agitation was the District Magistrate’s office complex in Udaipur, where a large number of YTF activists gathered in the morning. Protesters locked the main entrance gate, blocking staff and officials from entering the premises. The situation prompted immediate deployment of police and paramilitary forces to maintain law and order.
Gomati Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak and other senior officials rushed to the site and held talks with YTF leaders in an attempt to defuse tensions. However, the discussions failed to produce any breakthrough.
Protesters, waving locks and chains, chanted slogans against the DM and accused the administration of shielding an officer who allegedly disrespected their leader. The YTF issued a stern warning, demanding the DM’s transfer by 5 PM Monday, failing which a 12-hour district-wide shutdown would be enforced in Gomati on Tuesday.
The controversy stems from an incident over a week ago, when the DM allegedly refused to meet Pradyot Kishore Debbarma and the Chief Executive Member of TTAADC during their visit to his official residence.
Monday’s demonstration marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Tipra Motha supporters and the district administration, turning the issue into a significant law and order concern for the Tripura government.
