South Tripura, March 28: In a significant step toward strengthening rural livelihoods and promoting self-reliance, a new duckling hatchery unit has been established at West Pilak Gram Panchayat under the Jolaibari RD Block. The initiative is expected to create fresh income opportunities for local communities, particularly women associated with self-help groups (SHGs).

The hatchery, named “Maa Durga Krishi PG Duckling Production Unit,” has been set up with financial support from multiple sources. A sum of ₹1 lakh was provided from the discretionary fund of Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, while an additional ₹3.5 lakh was invested under the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM), functioning under the Rural Development Department.

The project was implemented under the guidance of TRLM and with the active involvement of Jolaibari RD Block Development Officer Nababrata Dutta. A key role in the successful execution of the initiative was played by women’s self-help groups operating under the Muhuripur Cluster Level Federation (CLF), highlighting the importance of community participation in grassroots development.

Officials stated that the hatchery unit will function as a sustainable source of quality ducklings for SHG members and “PG Didis,” enabling them to expand duck-rearing activities in the region. By ensuring a steady supply of ducklings, the unit is expected to enhance productivity and provide a reliable means of income generation for rural households.

The initiative is being viewed as a model for rural empowerment, especially for women, as it encourages entrepreneurship and financial independence through small-scale livestock activities. It is also expected to strengthen the local economy by promoting allied agricultural practices.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Jolaibari Panchayat Samiti Chairman Tapas Dutta, along with the head and deputy head of West Pilak Gram Panchayat and other dignitaries, marking the significance of the occasion.

With the launch of this hatchery unit, new avenues are likely to open in the duck-rearing sector, contributing to employment generation, income growth, and overall rural development in Tripura.
