The investigation into the death of BJP councillor and Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) Mandal president Rahul Kishore Roy has taken a significant turn with the arrest of one of the accused, intensifying attention on a case that has already sparked political debate and public concern across North Tripura.

Police on Sunday arrested Kankan Choudhury from his residence at Bhairab Sarani following allegations linked to Roy’s death. The arrest was carried out based on a complaint filed by Roy’s wife, Ananya Bhattacharjee, who accused several individuals of sustained harassment and alleged abetment that she claimed drove her husband to his death.

Confirming the development, Officer-in-Charge Mina Debbarma of Dharmanagar Police Station stated that a case had been registered under DMN PS 27/26. Police invoked several provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 329(4), 117(2), 351(3), and 108/3(5). Following his arrest, Choudhury was produced before a court for further legal proceedings.

Investigators said the accused is currently being questioned as police continue efforts to establish whether additional individuals named in the First Information Report (FIR) had any role in the incident. Authorities indicated that the interrogation could provide crucial leads regarding the sequence of events preceding Roy’s death.

Earlier, the North Tripura District and Sessions Court rejected anticipatory bail applications filed by three accused persons. The court reportedly cited the seriousness of the allegations and the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation. Legal observers believe the decision reflects concerns over possible interference in the inquiry process.

Rahul Kishore Roy died on May 5, a day after the Dharmanagar Assembly by-election results were announced. His body was discovered hanging inside the bathroom of his residence, and the incident was initially suspected to be a case of suicide.

However, family members later raised allegations of premeditated murder and abetment, claiming Roy and his family had faced threats and assaults linked to internal political disputes.

Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Home portfolio, assured that all allegations would be examined impartially. As the investigation progresses, public attention remains focused on whether the probe will uncover deeper political conflicts surrounding the case.
