A woman from Tripura’s Dhalai district has lodged a police complaint alleging that a couple, who reportedly posed as journalists, cheated her of nearly Rs 80,000 by promising assistance in securing justice for her son’s murder case. The allegation has sparked concern over the exploitation of vulnerable families dealing with personal tragedy and legal uncertainty.

Police sources said the complaint was filed against Nibedita Chakraborty and her husband Ram alias Banabir Chakraborty, residents of Kamalpur subdivision, for their alleged involvement in financial fraud.

The matter is linked to the recent murder of Ashis Das in the Surma Assembly constituency area of Dhalai district, a case that had already generated attention and concern among local residents.

According to the complaint filed by Anguribala Das, the mother of the deceased, the accused approached her shortly after her son’s death and allegedly presented themselves as individuals capable of helping her secure justice in the case. The woman claimed they assured her that they would ensure strict punishment for those responsible for the murder and provide necessary legal and other forms of assistance.

As per the allegations, the couple demanded Rs 1 lakh from her for facilitating the process and supporting the legal battle. Overwhelmed by grief following the death of her son, Anguribala Das allegedly trusted their promises and agreed to provide money.

The complainant stated that she initially handed over Rs 4,000 in cash and later transferred an additional Rs 71,000 in three separate online transactions. She claimed that the payments were made based on repeated assurances given by the accused.

However, according to the complaint, when she later contacted them for updates regarding progress in the case, she was repeatedly given excuses and vague assurances, with no visible development or action taken.

Suspecting that she had become a victim of fraud, Anguribala Das approached police and submitted a written complaint along with documents and records related to the financial transactions.

In her complaint, she sought legal action against the accused and demanded strict punishment not only for those allegedly involved in cheating her but also for the individuals responsible for her son’s murder. Police are expected to examine the allegations and verify the financial records submitted as part of the investigation.
