Fresh tension has gripped a crucial stretch of National Highway 208, which connects Tripura with neighbouring Assam, after unidentified miscreants allegedly targeted moving passenger vehicles with stones and airgun fire late on Monday night. The incident occurred near Lalkhira in the Patharkandi area, raising serious concerns over the safety of commuters and transport operators using the highway.

According to reports, the attacks took place around 8:30 p.m. when several vehicles were travelling along the relatively isolated stretch between Akaidum and Lalkhira. Victims alleged that stones were hurled from a roadside hillock at passing vehicles. Moments later, suspected airgun shots were reportedly fired at some of the vehicles, creating panic among drivers and passengers.

At least three passenger vehicles suffered partial damage during the incident. Although no serious injuries were reported, commuters described the experience as frightening. One driver, who was returning to Kathaltali from Silchar, said he narrowly escaped harm by accelerating his vehicle and leaving the area immediately after coming under attack.

Following the incident, a number of shaken drivers rushed to the Kathaltali police outpost and lodged formal complaints. Acting on the information, Sub-Inspector Kaushik Barman and his team visited the site and initiated an investigation to identify those responsible.

The stretch of highway where the attacks occurred is known for its sparse population and poor visibility at night. Local residents said the isolated nature of the area often provides opportunities for anti-social elements to target vehicles under the cover of darkness. According to locals, similar incidents have been reported in recent weeks, creating a growing sense of insecurity among regular commuters and commercial transport operators.

Residents and members of the transport community have expressed concern over the recurring attacks and urged the authorities to take immediate preventive measures. They have demanded increased night patrolling, installation of surveillance systems and enhanced police presence along vulnerable sections of the highway.

Transport operators warned that unless effective security arrangements are put in place, such incidents could eventually lead to a major accident or loss of life. Police have assured that investigations are underway and that appropriate steps will be taken to ensure the safety of highway users.
