Kailashahar: A court directive seeking an explanation from Kailashahar police over the alleged non-registration of a complaint against Tripura Minister Tinku Roy has sparked fresh political debate, with the Congress describing the development as a significant step towards accountability.

The Kailashahar First Class Court, presided over by Judge Ranjabati Roy, on August 6 directed the officer-in-charge of Kailashahar police station to appear personally before the court on September 15 and submit a written explanation regarding the matter.

Welcoming the directive at a press conference in Kailashahar, Congress MLA Birajit Sinha said it demonstrated that the law applies equally to everyone. He was accompanied by lawyer Narsingha Das, Unakoti District Congress president Mohammad Badruzzaman and party leader Chandrashekhar Sinha.

The dispute relates to allegations concerning an affidavit submitted by Roy, then a BJP candidate, during the 2023 Tripura Assembly elections. Congress leaders have alleged that Roy declared that he had passed Class XII from an education board in Madhya Pradesh and that no criminal cases were pending against him.

The Congress has claimed that the education board cited in the affidavit had previously been declared invalid by the government. Party leaders have further alleged that a case had been registered against Roy at West Agartala police station before he filed his nomination papers. The allegations have not been independently established in the proceedings described.

According to the Congress, Chandrashekhar Sinha submitted a written complaint to Kailashahar police on December 9, 2025, along with supporting documents. Additional papers were reportedly submitted by December 15. After police allegedly failed to register a case, a complaint was made to the Unakoti Superintendent of Police in January 2026, party leaders said.

The matter subsequently reached the court and was admitted on April 17.

During the August 6 hearing, the court reportedly sought clarification on whether police had made a General Diary entry after receiving the complaint, whether any preliminary inquiry or investigation had been conducted, and why a case had not been formally registered.

Lawyer Narsingha Das alleged negligence on the part of the police officials concerned and said the Congress could approach the Tripura High Court if appropriate departmental action is not taken.

The court’s intervention has intensified political attention on the case, with further developments expected after the police submit their explanation on September 15.
