Agartala: Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman has set an ambitious target of increasing the state’s Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education from the present 22 per cent to 75 per cent by 2030, saying the initiative is crucial for realising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a “Developed India” (Viksit Bharat).

Addressing a review meeting, titled “Ucchasiksha Sanglap” (Higher Education Dialogue), at the administrative building of Maharaja Bir Bikram (MBB) University on Thursday, the minister outlined a roadmap to strengthen the state’s higher education system through improved infrastructure, academic excellence and greater stakeholder participation.

“Our mission is clear. By 2030, Tripura must achieve 75 per cent enrolment in higher education. This requires modern infrastructure, a healthy academic environment and close coordination among teachers, students and government officials. Only then can every young person contribute meaningfully to nation-building,” Barman said.

He stressed that the transformation of higher education cannot be achieved by the government alone and called for equal participation from ministers, administrators, teachers and students. According to him, collective efforts are essential to build quality institutions capable of meeting future challenges.

The meeting reviewed infrastructure needs in colleges, discussed measures to resolve existing issues and explored ways to strengthen coordination between students, faculty members and administrators. The minister said MBB University, MBB College, BBMC College and the Law College, located within the same academic zone, would be developed into model institutions by 2030.

Highlighting the importance of student participation, Barman said the views of students who regularly attend classes and actively use facilities such as libraries, laboratories and canteens should receive priority in institutional decision-making.

He also announced that similar review meetings would be conducted across all districts to address local issues more effectively. Colleges, he said, should resolve minor administrative problems at their own level instead of forwarding every matter to the Higher Education Department.

The minister further informed that Tripura Technical University and the Women’s University, which have already received approval from the State Assembly and the Governor, are expected to begin academic sessions soon with student admissions. He added that the proposed Medical University would be taken up separately by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.

Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation Dipak Majumder and senior officials of the Higher Education Department attended the meeting. Barman said the 2030 goal is aimed not only at increasing enrolment but also at creating a modern, inclusive and student-centric higher education ecosystem in Tripura.
