Kolkata: Jan 20:

A CBI court in Kolkata on Monday sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a 31-year-old duty doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Roy was convicted after being found guilty of the heinous crime that occurred on August 9, 2023. The sentencing took place amid tight security, with nearly 500 policemen deployed around Sealdah Court to ensure order and prevent any disturbances.

The incident shocked the city, as the victim, a postgraduate trainee, was found dead in a hospital room under disturbing circumstances. Following the conviction, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das pronounced the life sentence for Roy, who had been brought to court from jail.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a brief comment, refrained from commenting on the judge’s decision regarding the sentence. While she had previously advocated for the death penalty in this case, she acknowledged that the sentence was ultimately up to the court, depending on how the case was framed. The emotional and public outcry over the case has sparked widespread calls for justice, including from medical professionals and local activists.

Roy’s conviction, after a trial conducted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), follows a year-long investigation into the brutal crime. The case had drawn attention to issues of safety and security at public medical institutions, as well as the broader question of how such crimes against women in healthcare settings are handled.

Despite the emotional weight of the case, the final sentence is seen as a reflection of the judicial process, with many expressing hope that it may serve as a deterrent against similar future crimes.
