Agartala: Feb 27:  Pradyot Kishore Debbarma, founder of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), highlighted the importance of indigenous rights over ministerial positions within the ruling alliance during a press interaction at the Youth Tipra Federation’s (YTF) first plenary session on Thursday. Debbarma stressed that addressing the core issues of indigenous communities is more significant than holding ministerial roles in the government. He emphasized that true leadership lies in fulfilling the community’s demands rather than seeking positions of power.

Debbarma reaffirmed that TMP’s alliance with the BJP is centered on the implementation of the Tiprasa Accord, a tripartite agreement signed in March 2024 between the central government, the Tripura government, and the Tipra Motha Party. This agreement aims to resolve issues concerning indigenous people, including land and political rights, economic development, and the preservation of culture, language, and identity. He stated that the future of Tipra Motha’s alliance with the BJP depends on the government’s commitment to implementing this accord.

“If the government of India is serious, they should implement it; if not, then Tipra Motha has to find its next step,” Debbarma said. He reiterated that critical issues like land rights, direct funding to the district council, and constitutional rights are non-negotiable.

The YTF’s plenary session, which began with a rally in Agartala, focused on key issues such as the demand for Greater Tipraland, the Tiprasa Accord, and the long-delayed village council elections. Debbarma highlighted the party’s emphasis on youth involvement, noting that 70% of Tipra Motha’s candidates in recent elections were young people. He indicated that the state government’s position on the Tiprasa Accord will determine the party’s next steps within the ruling alliance.
