Agartala: Mar 11: A state-level workshop on pig farming was organized by the Department of Animal Husbandry on Tuesday at the Rabindra Shatabarsiki Bhavan, Hall No. 2. The primary focus of the workshop was to discuss measures to protect pigs from various diseases. The event was attended by Sudhanshu Das, the Minister of Animal Husbandry, along with officials from the department.
Minister Sudhanshu Das highlighted the growing demand for pigs in the state, pointing out that there is a significant demand for meat in Tripura. He mentioned that 98% of the population in the state relies on meat for their dietary needs. However, he also noted that sometimes pigs in farms and villages experience health issues, which can be detrimental to the industry.
To address this concern, the department has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety and well-being of pigs in the state. The workshop aimed to inform veterinarians about how to protect pigs from diseases like swine flu and other risks that could impact the sector. Minister Das stressed that these efforts are part of the department’s broader initiative to mitigate potential health risks and ensure the sustainability of pig farming.
The Minister also acknowledged the growing number of unemployed individuals who have turned to pig farming for livelihood, helping reduce unemployment in the state. The department is focusing on empowering the youth of Tripura by providing them opportunities to become self-reliant through animal husbandry.
Minister Das further stated that Tripura is currently self-sufficient in meat production, thanks to the thriving pig farming industry. The department is committed to enhancing these efforts and ensuring that the state’s youth continue to benefit from this sector’s growth.
