Agartala: April 24: Tripura Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha has raised serious concerns regarding alleged unauthorized dam construction by the Bangladesh government along the border areas of Kailashahar and Belonia. In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary of Tripura, Saha urged the administration to take immediate and concrete steps toward a permanent resolution, warning of potential flooding in these vulnerable regions.

According to Saha, these high dams—constructed after last year’s floods—have already begun to impact agricultural lands near the border and pose an escalating risk to local communities as the monsoon season approaches. Despite multiple warnings, protests, and even questions raised in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, the construction activity reportedly continues unchecked.

Saha criticized India’s foreign policy under the Modi administration, alleging it has neglected the border areas and the hardships faced by their residents. He pointed out that while India had previously allowed the fencing of its own territory—often at the expense of local farmlands and livelihoods—such cooperation should also demand reciprocal sensitivity to activities on the other side of the border.

“The government cannot remain silent while citizens in border areas suffer due to repeated floods caused or worsened by activities across the border,” Saha wrote in his letter. He further stressed that the issue was not merely environmental but also deeply humanitarian, as many of those affected belong to minority communities.

Calling for urgent intervention by both the state and central governments, Saha emphasized the need to ensure relief and long-term security for the affected regions before the onset of monsoon. He urged the government to engage in diplomatic dialogue with Bangladesh and prioritize the welfare of its own border residents.
