Agartala: june 04: The Tripura state government has taken strict action against senior police officials over their handling of a recent protest by the Youth Tipra Federation (YTF), the youth wing of Tipra Motha, in the Gomati district. The protest, which sparked controversy and public outcry, was directed at Gomati District Magistrate Tarit Kanti Chakma, who reportedly declined to meet Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

On Wednesday, the government relieved Gomati Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak (IPS) and Additional SP Souvik Dey of their duties. Both officers have been directed to report to the Police Headquarters. In the interim, Bijoy Debbarma, SP of Sepahijala district, has been assigned additional charge of Gomati district.

During the protest, YTF activists locked the office of the Gomati District Magistrate, an act that was allegedly permitted by the police without intervention. The situation escalated when a group of protesters was seen trampling on a photo of the DM, an incident that triggered sharp criticism from the public and raised serious questions about the police’s inaction.

The apparent lack of resistance by the police during the agitation led many to believe that law enforcement had effectively surrendered in the face of pressure from YTF. The government’s decision to take disciplinary action against the top police officials involved is being seen as a message of accountability and a step toward maintaining administrative integrity.

This move has been largely welcomed by the general public, who viewed the police’s earlier response as a failure to uphold law and order. The government’s intervention is expected to restore public confidence and ensure that such lapses are not repeated in the future.
