Guwahati, June 24: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday confirmed that over 150 individuals have been arrested in connection with the recent communal violence in Dhubri district. Addressing the media during his second visit to the district within ten days, Sarma revealed that the alleged mastermind behind the unrest has been identified.

The tensions erupted following the discovery of prohibited mutton near a temple in Ward No. 3 during Eid al-Adha, which triggered communal disturbances in the sensitive border district. “The mastermind has been identified, and investigations are progressing swiftly,” Sarma said, reaffirming the government’s zero-tolerance approach towards communal violence.

Night curfews remain in force, with shoot-at-sight orders still active to maintain law and order. Sarma also disclosed that the state government is in talks with the Indian Army to set up a permanent base in Dhubri to bolster long-term security in the region.

“A permanent army camp will enhance our security infrastructure and help maintain peace,” he added.

The Chief Minister chaired a high-level review meeting at the Dhubri Circuit House, attended by the Chief Secretary, DGP, IGP (Law & Order), DC, and SP of Dhubri. The meeting assessed recent developments and reviewed efforts to sustain peace and public order in the district.

Sarma confirmed that normalcy has been restored, but law enforcement and intelligence operations will continue to remain active across sensitive areas. Discussions also included long-standing land-related issues, which the CM assured would be resolved over time.

The Dhubri unrest has ignited political debate across Assam, with leaders from various parties calling for swift justice and long-term solutions to maintain communal harmony.
