Mumbai, July 15 — Maharashtra is set to lead India’s electric vehicle (EV) revolution, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday during the inauguration of Tesla’s first Experience Centre in India, located in Mumbai. The launch marks Tesla’s formal entry into the Indian market, with CM Fadnavis calling it a “historic moment” for the state.

The Experience Centre, which also functions as a delivery, logistics, and service hub, was launched in the presence of Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, Principal Secretary Kaustubh Dhavse, and Tesla officials. Tesla also officially launched its popular Model Y in India at the event. The EV offers a range of up to 600 km on a single charge, charges in just 15 minutes, and is globally recognized for its safety features and zero emissions.

“Maharashtra has taken major steps to become the EV capital of India,” said CM Fadnavis, highlighting the state’s ambitious EV Policy 2025 introduced earlier this year. The policy offers significant incentives, including up to ₹2 lakh for commercial EVs and ₹20 lakh for electric buses. Private four-wheelers are no longer eligible for subsidies under the revised policy.

To support EV adoption, the state will build charging stations every 25 km on national and state highways. Additionally, four major charging hubs and 32 stations are being developed in Mumbai alone.

EVs registered in Maharashtra are exempt from road tax and registration fees and will also be toll-free on key expressways like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and the Samruddhi Mahamarg.

The policy also mandates charging infrastructure in all new residential and commercial buildings, aiming for a 30% increase in EV use by 2030. With Tesla’s entry and proactive government support, Maharashtra is positioning itself as India’s premier EV manufacturing and adoption hub.
