Agartala: July 19: In a solemn ceremony at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad, Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court on Saturday. Telangana Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, formerly the Deputy Chief Minister of Tripura, administered the oath in the presence of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, cabinet members, and other dignitaries.

Justice Singh’s appointment marks a significant milestone for Telangana’s judiciary, reinforcing a strong commitment to judicial integrity and the rule of law. His elevation follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s recommendation dated May 28. He succeeds Justice Sujoy Paul, who has been transferred to the Calcutta High Court.

Born on July 7, 1965, Justice Singh earned his BA Honours and LLB from the University of Delhi. Coming from a family with a judicial legacy—his maternal great-grandfather, B.P. Sinha, was the sixth Chief Justice of India—Justice Singh began his legal career at the Patna High Court in 1990. After the formation of the Jharkhand High Court in 2001, he continued his practice there until his elevation as a judge.

He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 24, 2012, and became a permanent judge in 2014. He also served as Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court and later as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court from April 17, 2023.

Justice Singh’s tenure is expected to focus on judicial reforms, speedy justice delivery, and strengthening constitutional values. Meanwhile, the Union government also approved the transfer of Chief Justices of the Rajasthan, Madras, and Jharkhand High Courts, signaling a broader reshuffle in the Indian judiciary.
