Agartala, Aug 5:
Leader of the Opposition and CPIM Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Tripura government on Tuesday, accusing it of failing to make any real progress in public services while allowing a section of ruling party leaders to grow “smart” in wealth and influence.

Speaking at a mass sit-in demonstration organised by the CPIM’s Abhaynagar Local Committee, Chaudhury mocked the state’s Smart City initiative. “Tripura’s roads, drinking water systems, and civic facilities haven’t become smart—only the houses, appearances, and bank accounts of BJP MLAs, corporators, and local leaders have,” he alleged.

The demonstration was held to demand the rollback of hiked rates for essential services including electricity, CNG, PNG, drinking water, and Gomati dairy milk. The CPIM also reiterated its opposition to the installation of smart meters and called for the resolution of long-standing local grievances.

Chaudhury accused the ruling party of collapsing civic infrastructure in Agartala through mismanagement and corruption. “Those who came to power via rigged polls and fake votes now enjoy public posts and benefits. They have become ‘smart’ while the public continues to suffer,” he said.

Calling for deeper reform, Chaudhury remarked, “It’s not just sewage that needs draining from Agartala—it’s time for a complete political cleansing.”

The protest witnessed participation from several CPIM leaders, party workers, and residents, who raised slogans against the government’s policies and demanded accountability. The Opposition leader’s remarks reflect growing discontent over public service delivery and rising costs of essential utilities under the current administration.
