New Delhi, August 6:
Hon’ble State BJP President and Rajya Sabha MP Shri Rajib Bhattacharjee today spoke in support of the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 during a discussion in the Rajya Sabha. Emphasizing the importance of the proposed legislation, Bhattacharjee said the bill will significantly modernize and streamline maritime trade practices in India.

The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025 seeks to replace the existing colonial-era statute—The Carriage of Goods by Sea Act, 1925—to better align India’s maritime cargo regulations with contemporary international laws and conventions, particularly the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea (also known as the Rotterdam Rules).

During his speech, Shri Bhattacharjee highlighted that the bill reflects the Modi government’s commitment to enhancing India’s logistics sector, reducing bottlenecks in sea trade, and promoting ease of doing business. He said the legislation would bring clarity to the rights and responsibilities of carriers and consignors, ensure smoother dispute resolution, and boost investor confidence in India’s shipping infrastructure.

He further stressed the bill’s significance for states like Tripura and other landlocked northeastern regions, stating that improved maritime cargo laws will complement the ongoing infrastructure push and connectivity projects aimed at linking the region with ports via Bangladesh.

Shri Bhattacharjee expressed hope that with such progressive steps, India would strengthen its position in the global maritime economy. He concluded by thanking the central government for its vision in introducing this long-awaited reform and reiterated his party’s full support for the bill.
