Agartala, November 9:

In a decisive step to combat noise pollution and uphold public safety, the Tripura Traffic Police on Sunday destroyed 410 illegally modified bike silencers near MBB College in Agartala. The action was carried out in compliance with a directive issued by the Court, reinforcing the administration’s zero-tolerance policy against traffic violations and environmental hazards.

The special operation was led by Traffic Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanta Jahangir and formed part of an ongoing statewide drive aimed at curbing the use of modified motorcycle exhaust systems that violate permissible sound limits. These modified silencers, often used to create loud and disturbing noises, have become a growing concern for both residents and authorities.

Speaking to reporters, SP Jahangir said that such modifications not only disturb the peace but also pose significant health risks. “Modified silencers cause excessive noise pollution, affecting students, patients, and the elderly. They also contribute to stress and hearing-related issues. Today’s drive was part of our continued effort to promote road safety and public well-being,” she stated.

The destroyed silencers had been seized over the past few weeks during intensified checking drives across Agartala and other parts of the state. The Traffic Police have been conducting awareness campaigns to educate bikers about the legal consequences of altering vehicle parts, which is a punishable offence under the Motor Vehicles Act.

SP Jahangir further urged vehicle owners to comply with the law and cooperate with enforcement agencies. She emphasized that such drives will continue in the coming days to ensure a safer, quieter, and more disciplined traffic environment across Tripura.

The crackdown has been widely appreciated by citizens, marking a firm administrative stance against noise pollution and reckless modification practices in the state.
