Agartala, Dec 3:
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Wednesday said that more than 50,000 vehicles across the state are now running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), marking a major shift toward cleaner and more cost-effective mobility. The announcement came while he inaugurated Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited’s (TNGCL) new CNG station at Khilpara in the Gomati district.

Calling CNG an internationally accepted clean fuel, the Chief Minister said the state’s BJP government is committed to addressing people’s fundamental needs, including access to affordable and environmentally-friendly energy. “Its popularity is increasing with technological advancement. This new station in Khilpara will function as a mother station, supplying CNG to other areas over time,” he noted.

Saha thanked TNGCL for expanding its network and revealed that new CNG stations are being planned for Fatikchhara and Bodhjungnagar in West Tripura. He also highlighted that the company aims to extend its reach beyond Agartala and Udaipur to various other locations across the state.

Since 2018, TNGCL has added about 31 CNG stations in Tripura, significantly helping reduce air pollution. The Chief Minister said that auto drivers, taxi owners and private vehicle users would benefit from the Khilpara station, built at a cost of ₹8 crore. He added that steps are underway to upgrade stations at Arundhuti Nagar and Barjala.

Saha further informed that land has already been allocated for CNG stations in Mohanpur, while discussions are ongoing to establish new stations at Khayerpur-Amtali bypass, Bagma, Amarpur and Ampi.

The event was attended by Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Industries Minister Santana Chakma, several MLAs, district officials and TNGCL representatives.

TNGCL, a joint venture of GAIL (India) Ltd, Tripura Industrial Development Corporation and Assam Gas Company Ltd, remains one of Eastern India’s fastest-growing natural gas distribution companies, supplying fuel to households, industries and transport networks across West Tripura and Gomati districts.
