In a significant breakthrough against the illegal drug trade, police personnel from East Agartala Police Station arrested a man with a large quantity of Yaba tablets during a routine vehicle checking operation in the Dhaleshwar area on Friday night.

The accused has been identified as Shankhadip Roy, a resident of Dhaleshwar Road No. 8. According to police sources, the arrest was made around 8:30 PM when a team from East Agartala Police Station was conducting regular checking of vehicles and pedestrians as part of intensified surveillance to curb criminal activities in the area.

East Agartala Police Station Officer-in-Charge Subrata Debnath said that Roy’s movements appeared suspicious, prompting the police to stop and search him. During the personal search, officers recovered 500 Yaba tablets concealed inside the pocket of his jacket. The tablets were immediately seized in the presence of witnesses, following all legal procedures.

After the recovery, police took the accused into custody and carried out a follow-up search at his residence in Dhaleshwar. However, no additional contraband or incriminating materials were found during the house search, Debnath added.

Police suspect that the accused may be involved in drug peddling and are investigating the source of the seized Yaba tablets, as well as possible links to a wider narcotics network operating in and around Agartala. Officials believe the seizure could help uncover further leads related to the supply chain of synthetic drugs in the region.

A case has been registered against Shankhadip Roy under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. On Saturday, the accused was produced before the court, where police sought a five-day remand to facilitate detailed interrogation and further investigation into the matter.

Police officials reiterated their commitment to continuing strict action against drug trafficking and urged citizens to cooperate by sharing information related to illegal narcotics activities to help maintain law and order in the city.
