Jerusalem, March 2: Israel’s Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, on Monday said that Israel, along with the United States, is currently controlling the skies over Iran and has targeted more than 2,500 military sites amid the ongoing conflict. In an exclusive interaction with IANS, Azar expressed hope that a regime change could take place in Iran, saying the decision ultimately rests with the Iranian people.

Azar stated that Israel has intercepted the majority of missiles and drones launched towards its territory from Iran and from Hezbollah in the north. However, he confirmed that nine civilians were killed and around 50 injured following a direct ballistic missile strike in Beit Shemesh. Despite the casualties, he maintained that Israel’s air defence systems have neutralised most incoming threats.

Speaking about the broader objective, Azar said the current focus remains on degrading Iran’s military capabilities to ensure it can no longer target Israel, American bases, or other regional countries. He added that Israeli operations have struck key facilities linked to the Basij and the Revolutionary Guards across Iran.

On the possibility of regime change following the reported death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Azar said millions of Iranians have previously demonstrated for change and expressed hope they would again push for reforms.

He ruled out any large-scale ground invasion for now, stating that Israel’s actions are primarily air-based, though limited operations cannot be ruled out.

Azar also appreciated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and highlighted the strong ties between India and Israel, saying both nations seek peace, stability and prosperity in their respective regions.
