Preparations are in full swing for the 152nd Baruni Mela, which will be held at the confluence of the Muhuri River in Laugang under Santirbazar subdivision on March 17, marking the 2nd day of the month of Chaitra in the traditional calendar. The annual fair, deeply rooted in local religious and cultural traditions, is expected to draw thousands of devotees and visitors from across Tripura and neighbouring regions.

Organizers have announced that the sacred ‘Snan’ ritual, considered the most significant part of the Baruni Mela, will take place between 8:00 a.m. and 8:09 a.m. on the day of the event. Devotees believe that taking a holy dip in the river during this auspicious time brings spiritual purification and blessings.

As part of the preparations, arrangements are being made to ensure the smooth conduct of the fair and to accommodate the large number of pilgrims expected to attend. Organizers said stalls for vendors and traders will be allotted from March 14, allowing adequate time for setting up shops before the mela begins.

The Baruni Mela has been observed for generations and holds a special place in the cultural and religious life of the region. During the fair, devotees gather at the local Maa Ganga temple to offer prayers and pour water in memory of their ancestors, a ritual believed to bring peace to departed souls.

To ensure the comfort of pilgrims and visitors, accommodation and other basic facilities are also being arranged near the mela grounds. Local authorities and organizers are coordinating to maintain order, cleanliness, and security throughout the event.

Ahead of the fair, a Swachh Bharat Abhiyan cleanliness drive was carried out at the mela site to prepare the area for the large gathering. In addition, social initiatives such as the distribution of clothes to poor and needy people have also been planned.

The Baruni Mela continues to stand as a vibrant symbol of Tripura’s cultural heritage, reflecting the state’s enduring traditions of faith, devotion, and community participation.
