Agartala: Emphasising the crucial role of young people in nation-building, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said that youths are the builders of tomorrow and their active participation in politics is vital for strengthening democracy.

The Minister made the remarks while addressing the State-Level Viksit Bharat Youth Parliament 2026 held at the Tripura Legislative Assembly in Agartala on Saturday.

Addressing the gathering, Nath said that India achieved independence in 1947 and the country must strive to become the world’s leading nation by 2047. Referring to the vision of Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat, he said only 22 years remain to build a strong foundation for the future.

“I have not come here merely to deliver a speech but to ignite a fire — a fire of thought, courage and responsibility among the youth,” he said, adding that young people have historically played a crucial role in the freedom struggle and social reforms.

The Minister noted that India faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and discrimination, but significant progress has been made under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Nath also highlighted that democracy is not limited to casting votes but includes respecting diverse opinions and having the courage to stand for the truth. He stressed that the nation must always come first.

Referring to great national icons like Swami Vivekananda, Subhas Chandra Bose, Gautama Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi, the Minister said India believes in peace but is also capable of responding firmly to any challenge.

He further stated that India’s greatest strength lies in its vast human resources and youthful demographic dividend. However, he urged young people to be guided by morality, integrity, research and a spirit of inquiry.

“If honest and educated individuals stay away from politics, democracy will become weak. Youths must participate in every sphere of society,” he added.

Among others present at the programme were Speaker-in-Charge Ram Prasad Paul, Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Tinku Roy, SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das, Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia and MLA Chitta Ranjan Debbarma.
