Agartala, May 29: In a major organisational development for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tripura, Matabari MLA Abhishek Debroy on Friday formally assumed charge as the new president of the party’s state unit, succeeding former state president and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee.
The ceremonial transition took place at the BJP state headquarters in Agartala in the presence of Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, senior office bearers and a large number of party workers and supporters.
During the programme, Chief Minister Saha and outgoing president Rajib Bhattacharjee symbolically seated Debroy in the president’s chair, officially marking the transfer of leadership within the party’s state organisation.
Addressing party workers after assuming office, Debroy said he would work towards strengthening the BJP’s organisational structure across Tripura while remaining committed to the party’s ideology and principles.
“Our motto is ‘Nation First and Self Last’. I will work by respecting senior leaders, learning from their experience and involving young workers to energise the organisation at the grassroots,” Debroy said.
He stressed the importance of unity within the organisation and called upon party workers to remain dedicated to public service and development-oriented politics. Debroy also urged the media to highlight the welfare initiatives and developmental works undertaken by the government.
“I request the media to take the welfare-oriented and development works of this government to the people through responsible reporting,” he added.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha expressed confidence that the party would become stronger under Debroy’s leadership. He praised outgoing president Rajib Bhattacharjee for his contribution to strengthening the organisation during his tenure and recalled his own experience of previously serving as state BJP president.
“Leadership change is part of our party’s tradition. Soon, a new state committee and Morcha committees will be formed, which will further rejuvenate the organisation and motivate workers,” Saha said.
The Chief Minister also stated that Debroy’s responsibilities would include strengthening the party’s grassroots base and preparing the organisation for the 2028 Assembly elections.
Political observers view the appointment of Debroy, a young legislator, as an attempt by the BJP leadership to inject fresh energy into the party organisation, bridge generational gaps and reinforce the party’s presence across Tripura.
