Agartala: April 17: In Agartala, the Tripura unit of the ruling BJP has announced a statewide campaign titled “Waqf Sudhar Janjagran Abhiyan” to raise awareness about the newly enacted Waqf Amendment Act. The campaign, set to begin on April 20, aims to highlight the reforms introduced by the BJP-led NDA government at the center.
The announcement was made by BJP national secretary Anil K Antony during a workshop held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhawan on Thursday. The event was attended by prominent state BJP leaders, including Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, former Chief Minister and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, and state BJP president and MP Rajib Bhattacharjee.
Antony emphasized that the Waqf Amendment Act seeks to promote transparency, accountability, and the economic upliftment of marginalized Muslim communities through better utilization of Waqf properties. He cited the Sachar Committee Report, which highlighted the vast potential of Waqf properties, and alleged that corruption and mismanagement had hindered their effective use.
Under the new law, all Waqf properties across India must be registered within six months, with the income generated directed towards welfare initiatives for poor Muslim families, women, and orphans. Antony also noted that the provisions allow marginalized Muslims to form their own Waqf Boards.
The BJP leaders criticized the Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) for allegedly spreading misinformation about the Act for political gain. Through the campaign, BJP workers plan to engage with madrasa students, women, and youth in minority-dominated areas to explain the benefits of the legislation.
The party leadership reiterated its commitment to empowering marginalized sections of the Muslim community and addressing misconceptions surrounding the Act. The campaign is expected to focus on fostering understanding and support for the reforms introduced by the Waqf Amendment Act.
