Bishramganj, August 6: In the aftermath of violent incidents in Bishramganj, bus drivers operating along the Agartala–Sonamura route have suspended services indefinitely, demanding a fair and transparent probe into the alleged assault of a young woman and the subsequent mob attack on bus staff. The drivers have warned that they will not resume operations until their safety is assured and justice is delivered.

One of the protesting drivers stated that the bus staff had no involvement in the alleged assault. He claimed the victim had not approached the driver, conductor, or any passengers during the journey. The situation turned volatile when the bus was intercepted at Bishramganj Bazaar, where miscreants physically assaulted the driver and co-driver. The attack left several passengers stranded and injured due to stone pelting.

“We’re scared for our lives. If this continues, we won’t risk returning to the roads,” said a driver, highlighting the growing fear among transport workers.

Hours after the bus attack, another incident occurred when a family returning from Bagma was attacked in Dewan Bazar. Their vehicle was vandalized, prompting them to seek shelter at a local police station.

A woman present during the bus attack described the assailants as unknown men armed with machetes, creating panic among the passengers.

Authorities have since imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 and stepped up police presence in sensitive areas. Investigations are underway to track those responsible.

TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Deb Barma called the events “alarming,” urging restraint and unity. He condemned the assault and emphasized that the issue should not be politicized along ethnic lines. He assured the victim and her family of support and has spoken to the DGP regarding the investigation.

A TIPRA Motha delegation also submitted a deputation demanding justice for the victim and punishment for the accused.
