Tipra Motha Party founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman on Thursday said that discussions with the Centre on issues concerning the indigenous Tiprasa people are progressing and that a new interlocutor has been appointed to continue the dialogue related to the proposed Tiprasa Accord.

Addressing supporters through a social media livestream, Debbarman stated that while the party’s victory in the recent Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections was significant, it represented only an electoral achievement. He stressed that key issues involving land rights, constitutional safeguards, financial empowerment and economic development of the indigenous communities remain unresolved.

“The fight is still on. The election results reflected the aspirations of the Tiprasa people for the protection of their rights and future,” he said.

Debbarman explained that after the TTAADC polls, he chose to focus on negotiations and long-term solutions rather than limiting himself to conventional political activities. According to him, continuous engagement with the central government has helped bring the concerns and grievances of the Tiprasa people to the attention of national leaders.

Referring to his participation in various national-level events, including a recent NDA conclave, Debbarman said such engagements were aimed at maintaining dialogue with decision-makers and advancing the interests of indigenous communities. He revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had discussed issues related to Tripura and the Northeast with him, underscoring the importance of regular consultations to resolve pending matters.

The Tipra Motha chief also disclosed that a meeting had recently been held with the Director of the Intelligence Bureau and the newly appointed interlocutor responsible for carrying forward discussions on the accord process.

Claiming that certain groups had attempted to delay the process, Debbarman nevertheless expressed optimism. “The central government is keen to resume talks and address the concerns of the Tiprasa people,” he said.

Reaffirming his party’s commitment to securing rights and safeguards similar to those enjoyed by other indigenous communities in the Northeast, Debbarman said his primary objective remains the protection and advancement of Tripura’s indigenous population.
