Agartala, Nov 24: Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jitendra Choudhury has strongly criticized the state government following the arrest of Bishwajit Bhoumik, brother of former Union Minister of State Pratima Bhoumik. The arrest was made on Monday morning after police alleged that Bishwajit used forged identity documents—including the name of Pratima Bhoumik’s father—to create illegal papers in Bangladesh and bring a Bangladeshi woman into Tripura for marriage in violation of immigration laws.

Reacting sharply, Choudhury said the incident reflects a deeper and persistent problem under the current administration. He argued that ever since the BJP came to power, the government has consistently undermined legal and administrative discipline, often manipulating rules for personal or political gain.

Clarifying his stance, Choudhury noted that he has no objection to marriages between Indian and Bangladeshi citizens, provided all legal procedures are followed. The issue, he emphasized, lies not in the marriage itself but in the alleged unlawful methods used to facilitate it.

The LoP further alleged that this case is only a small part of a much larger pattern. He claimed that several individuals associated with the ruling party have been involved in illegal activities since 1971, using forged documents and benefiting from political protection. According to him, this nexus extends to other sectors, including illegal trade and smuggling across the border.

Choudhury urged the police to conduct a fair and unbiased investigation, examining all links connected to the case. He warned that if law enforcement continues to act selectively, public frustration could escalate into stronger protests.

Responding to recent verbal attacks from BJP leaders, the LoP dismissed their comments as reflective of their political culture rather than of his own conduct. He added that engaging in rebuttals would only lower his dignity, reaffirming his commitment to defending the rule of law and demanding accountability from those in power.
