Agartala: Mar 17: A 16-point drive is scheduled to take place on March 24, advocating for urgent reforms to support unorganized road transport workers. The primary demands include Social Security Law, Withdrawal of Sections 106(1) and 106(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and Amendments to the Motor Vehicles Act 2019 in favor of workers.
This nationwide drive will be supported by workers across the country, including those in Agartala. A procession was recently organized by the All India Road Transport Workers Federation, where labor leaders like CITU State President Manik Dey and CITU leader Amal Chakraborty emphasized the pressing concerns of transport workers.
Manik Dey highlighted that over 10 crore transport workers face severe hardships, citing issues like unpaid wages, lack of medical treatment, and poor working conditions. He criticized the government’s policies, stating that they undermine the transport sector and burden workers with higher taxes. Dey also expressed concerns about transport agencies involved in drug trafficking, urging better protections for workers and significant wage increases.
