Raipur, July 18 — The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday morning conducted a fresh raid at the Bhilai residence of former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, intensifying its probe into the alleged multi-crore liquor scam. The operation began around 6 a.m. and involved over a dozen ED officials, accompanied by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

This is the second ED raid targeting Baghel and his family in the past six months. The latest action is reportedly part of an ongoing investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), focusing on Baghel’s son, Chaitanya Baghel. According to ED sources, new evidence links Chaitanya to proceeds from an illegal liquor syndicate that allegedly defrauded the state exchequer of over ₹2,100 crore.

The timing of the raid—coinciding with Chaitanya’s birthday and the final day of the state Assembly’s Monsoon Session—has drawn sharp political reactions. Former CM Baghel left his residence early to attend the Assembly, even as a heavy security presence was established across Durg district to maintain law and order.

The raid sparked protests by Congress workers in Bhilai, who gathered outside the residence shouting slogans like “ED go back.” Protesters breached barricades and clashed with police, prompting authorities to deploy reinforcements from across the district.

During a previous raid at Baghel’s residence in March, similar unrest was reported, including incidents of stone pelting. Anticipating further disturbances, police have heightened security across sensitive locations.

While the ED has not yet released an official statement on the latest raid, the incident has reignited debate over the use of central agencies against political opponents. Congress leaders have alleged misuse of investigative bodies, while BJP leaders maintain that the law must take its course.
