Kathmandu, Sep 8 — At least eight people were killed and hundreds injured in Nepal’s capital on Monday as Gen Z-led protests against alleged corruption and the government’s decision to ban social media turned violent, local media reported.

The demonstrations began at Maitighar, where hundreds gathered to oppose the ban that has sparked anger across the country. Tensions escalated when protesters stormed restricted zones and forced their way into the Federal Parliament premises in New Baneshwor.

Authorities swiftly imposed a curfew across key areas of Kathmandu and deployed the Nepali Army to restore order. Security forces resorted to tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets, and even aerial firing to disperse the crowd. Despite the crackdown, protesters continued to clash with police.

According to The Himalayan Times, five of the deceased died while undergoing treatment at the Trauma Centre, two at Civil Hospital, and one at Kathmandu Medical College. Several victims have been identified, while others remain unnamed.

The violence left hundreds injured, including demonstrators, journalists, and security personnel. Many are hospitalized across Kathmandu, with several in critical condition. Officials described the situation in Baneshwor as “highly tense,” alleging that protesters pelted stones at police before being driven out of Parliament grounds.

The government said the curfew would remain in force until 10 p.m., covering areas from Baneshwor Chowk to Bijuli Bazaar bridge, Tinkune Chowk, Ratna Rajya School, and Shankhamul bridge.

Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli defended the decision, stating the government was not against social platforms but against “lawlessness and arrogance.” He said companies had been given a year to register under Nepalese law, pay taxes, and comply with regulations, but refused.

On September 4, the government blocked 26 unregistered platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, and X.
