Agartala: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday described the establishment of Tripura’s only government dental college as a historic achievement that has fulfilled the long-cherished hopes and aspirations of the people of the state. He said the institution has quickly emerged as an important centre for education, medical training and healthcare services.

The Chief Minister was speaking while inaugurating the third Foundation Day celebration of Agartala Government Dental College at Muktadhara Auditorium. On the same occasion, he also inaugurated the earthquake-resistant renovation and restoration work of the old I.G.M. Hospital building and later took part in the groundbreaking ceremony for the new buildings of Agartala Government Dental College and I.G.M. Hospital.

Dr. Saha said the journey of the government dental college began in 2023 and has made remarkable progress in a short span of time. “With the proactive initiatives of the present state government and the constant support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this institution is moving steadily on the path of success. Students of Tripura now have access to advanced dental education, while the people are benefiting from improved and modern dental healthcare services,” he said.

Recalling the formation of the present government in 2018, the Chief Minister noted that no previous government had taken the initiative to establish such an institution within such a limited timeframe. “Keeping in mind public needs, the future of students and the strengthening of the healthcare system, the present government established the dental college in record time. Today, it has earned appreciation at the national level,” he said.

Dr. Saha informed that the college started the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) course in the 2023–24 academic session with 50 seats, which have now been increased to 63. He reiterated the government’s commitment to infrastructure development across Tripura and assured that while the old I.G.M. Hospital would be renovated, its historical significance would be preserved.

Emphasising ethical medical practice, the Chief Minister said healthcare must be accessible to all without discrimination. He urged doctors to serve society with dedication and compassion. Senior health officials, including Health Secretary Kiran Gitte and Dental College Principal Dr. Shalu Rai, were present at the event.
