Agartala, May 21: Congress MLA Gopal Chandra Roy on Thursday urged the Tripura government to introduce a financial assistance scheme for women similar to initiatives announced in other states, arguing that such support would strengthen the economic condition of women and provide greater financial security.

Speaking during a programme organised to observe the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Roy referred to a recently announced welfare initiative in West Bengal and questioned why a similar scheme could not be implemented in Tripura.

He stated that financial assistance programmes aimed at supporting women have become important tools for social welfare and economic empowerment. Roy said women in Tripura should also receive greater support and called upon the state government to consider introducing similar measures.

The Congress leader pointed out that the BJP has been governing Tripura for the last eight years and urged the administration to take steps that directly benefit women across different sections of society. He also appealed to women in the state to raise their concerns and seek stronger economic assistance from the government.

The programme was attended by Congress leaders and party workers, including Youth Congress president Neel Kamal Saha, who joined Roy in paying floral tributes to Rajiv Gandhi.

Remembering the former Prime Minister, Roy said Rajiv Gandhi played a significant role in shaping modern India through his emphasis on technology, development and reforms. He noted that when Rajiv Gandhi advocated a technology-driven India, many political parties opposed the idea, arguing that technological advancement could affect employment opportunities.

However, Roy said that over time India’s progress had demonstrated the importance of technology in development and governance. He remarked that computers and digital tools have now become essential in almost every field, including political and administrative activities.

Roy also claimed that Rajiv Gandhi’s vision had laid the foundation for the country’s technological and digital transformation.

Criticising the present government, he alleged that several public sector undertakings established during earlier Congress administrations had weakened over time. He further raised concerns over rising prices of fuel and essential commodities, claiming that inflation has increased the financial burden on common people.
