Agartala: Dec 16: The year 1971 marked the beginning of the Bangladesh Liberation War under Pakistan’s occupation. During this war, Indian soldiers extended full support to Bangladesh’s struggle for independence, with many Indian soldiers laying down their lives in the process. The war lasted for 13 days, and on December 16, 1971, Bangladesh achieved its independence, giving birth to a new nation. December 16 is thus a day of remembrance for the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the liberation of Bangladesh.
On this day, a tribute ceremony was held at the Shaheed Smarak (Martyr’s Memorial) in Albert Ekka Park, Lichubagan, Agartala, to honor the heroes of the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Governor of Tripura paid his respects at the memorial, alongside Indian Army soldiers who participated in the ceremony organized by the Indian Armed Forces.
In an interview with the media after the event, the Governor stated that the Indian soldiers demonstrated immense strength and courage in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. He emphasized that over 900 Pakistani soldiers had surrendered on December 16, 1971, marking one of the largest surrenders in military history. The Governor highlighted that no other country in the world had witnessed such a large-scale surrender.
He also praised the Indian Army for their pivotal role in this historic achievement and expressed admiration for their bravery. The Governor conveyed his condolences to the families of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the war. Later, the Governor inaugurated a bicycle rally as part of the celebrations, symbolizing peace, unity, and the enduring friendship between India and Bangladesh.
