Darjeeling’s century-old landmark, Hotel Mount Everest, once a symbol of grandeur that hosted stalwarts like Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Amitabh Bachchan, is set to be dismantled. In its place, a modern housing complex and a new hotel will rise, marking the end of an era and the beginning of a fresh chapter for the heritage site.

The historic property, which has stood tall for over 100 years, has long been a silent witness to Darjeeling’s evolving social and cultural landscape. Owned by East India Hotels (EIH) Limited, the parent company of the Oberoi and Trident hotel chains, the building had fallen into disuse after a devastating fire ravaged much of its structure nearly three decades ago. Since then, the once-bustling hotel has remained closed, its walls bearing the scars of neglect and time.

EIH recently announced that the property has been sold for Rs 11 crore to a consortium of businessmen led by B.M. Garg, a Darjeeling-based multiplex owner. The consortium has ambitious redevelopment plans for the site, combining residential and hospitality ventures to serve the needs of a changing Darjeeling.

Speaking about the project, B.M. Garg said:

“The property has been bought by a consortium of businessmen. We plan to dismantle the hotel as it is a 100-year-old structure. The property was ravaged by fire and has been closed for 30 years now. Reviving it in its original form is not feasible, so we have decided to give it a new life in a different shape.”

For many locals, the decision brings mixed feelings. Hotel Mount Everest was more than just a hotel; it was an icon. During its heyday, it welcomed political leaders, film stars, and prominent personalities, making it a cornerstone of Darjeeling’s hospitality industry. The presence of Mohammed Ali Jinnah, long before he became the founder of Pakistan, and Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan added to the hotel’s legacy and mystique.

However, the practical realities of restoring the heritage building proved daunting. Structural damage from the fire, coupled with decades of abandonment, left the property unsafe and unviable. For EIH, maintaining the site had become increasingly unsustainable, leading to the decision to sell.

The new development, according to Garg, will be designed to balance Darjeeling’s traditional charm with modern needs. The housing complex is expected to cater to the growing demand for premium residential spaces in the hill town, while the new hotel will attempt to fill the gap left by the closure of Mount Everest. By creating a fresh, vibrant space, the consortium hopes to attract both locals and tourists, strengthening Darjeeling’s appeal as a destination.

While some heritage enthusiasts lament the loss of an iconic building, others view the change as a practical step towards urban renewal. The project also reflects a larger trend across India, where historic structures—unable to withstand the passage of time—are being replaced by modern developments that cater to contemporary lifestyles.

As Darjeeling moves forward, the memory of Hotel Mount Everest will remain etched in the town’s history. Its walls may be dismantled, but the stories they once held—of political discussions, cultural gatherings, and glittering evenings—will live on as part of the hill station’s rich heritage.
