India’s Direct Tax Collections Double in Five Years Amid Rising Incomes, Compliance Surge

New Delhi, July 25: India’s gross direct tax collections have more than doubled over the past five years, reflecting robust economic growth and a surge in tax compliance driven by digital transformation and policy reforms.

According to the Finance Ministry, gross direct tax collections rose from ₹12.31 lakh crore in FY 2020-21 to ₹27.02 lakh crore in FY 2024-25. This remarkable growth is supported by a 36% rise in the number of income tax returns (ITRs) filed—up from 6.72 crore in FY 2020-21 to 9.19 crore in FY 2024-25.

The increase is attributed to expanded taxpayer outreach and a series of technology-driven reforms. Initiatives such as the PAN-Aadhaar linkage, Centralised Processing Centre (CPC), TRACES for TDS reconciliation, and the advanced Tax Information Network (TIN) 2.0 have improved transparency and convenience.

The IT Department’s PROJECT INSIGHT has been a game changer, creating a 360-degree taxpayer profile using data analytics, enabling better compliance tracking. The Faceless Assessment Scheme launched in 2019 further reduced discretion and increased accountability through anonymous case allocation and digital communication.

The Annual Information Statement (AIS), implemented in November 2021, now provides a detailed view of taxpayers’ financial transactions, supporting pre-filled returns through the Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).

Additionally, behavioural interventions like the NUDGE framework are nudging taxpayers toward voluntary compliance, while Section 139(8A), introduced in 2022, allows filing of updated returns within 24 months, offering more flexibility to taxpayers.

The growth in direct tax collections showcases the combined impact of economic momentum, widening tax base, and digital governance—establishing a more transparent and efficient tax ecosystem in India.
