Agartala, April 28 — Severe cyclonic winds and heavy rainfall triggered by a Kalboisakhi storm have caused widespread damage to electricity infrastructure across Tripura, disrupting power supply in Agartala and several other parts of the state.

Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath said on Tuesday that the intensity of the storm had significantly impacted both transmission and distribution systems. “Power supply and infrastructure have been severely affected across the state, including Agartala, due to the strong storm,” he said in a social media post.

According to officials, numerous electric poles were uprooted in multiple locations, while overhead wires snapped under the force of strong winds. Fallen trees, bamboo clusters, and other debris further compounded the damage by landing on power lines, leading to widespread outages and safety hazards.

Engineers and field workers of the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited began restoration work early in the morning, working under challenging conditions to repair damaged infrastructure and resume electricity supply. Teams have been deployed across affected districts to assess the extent of the damage and expedite repair efforts.

The minister also noted that personnel from disaster management units and staff from various government departments have joined hands in the restoration process, ensuring coordinated action on the ground.

While electricity has been restored in some areas, a majority of the state continues to face disruptions. Authorities have cautioned that in certain locations, power supply must remain suspended temporarily to prevent accidents during ongoing repair work.

“In some places, power supply has to remain suspended for safety reasons,” Nath stated, urging residents to remain patient as crews work to stabilize the system.

Expressing regret over the inconvenience caused, the minister appealed for public cooperation during the crisis. “I express regret for the inconvenience caused to the people of the state and request everyone to cooperate with the employees of the power corporation during this natural calamity,” he said.

The incident highlights the vulnerability of essential infrastructure to extreme weather events, even as efforts continue to restore normalcy across Tripura.
