Agartala, Sept 21:
The political climate in Tripura has heated up following the mysterious death of a woman, who was discovered with severe burn injuries at Mirza in Gomati district on Friday morning.
Police, probing the case from multiple angles, arrested four persons on Saturday evening, including Anupam Majumder alias Manna, nephew of a sitting MLA. Confirming the development, Superintendent of Police (Gomati) Dr. Kiran Kumar said further investigation is in progress.
In a related move, authorities suspended Sanjoy Sarkar, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Kakraban police station, for wilful negligence of duty. According to the order, the deceased woman, identified as Anjali Sarkar, and her husband Pankaj Sarkar, had lodged a complaint at Kakraban police station on the night of September 18. They alleged that Manna, along with two others, had threatened them at their Mirza market shop due to prior enmity. The Officer-in-Charge had directed ASI Sarkar to verify the complaint and take action, but he allegedly failed to do so.
The incident has triggered strong political reactions. Leaders from the BJP, Congress, and CPM, including Minister Pranajit Singha Roy and MLA Abhishek Debroy, visited the residence of the deceased and expressed solidarity with the grieving family.
The Congress delegation, led by MLA Birajit Sinha, alleged Manna’s direct involvement in the crime. They also met the Director General of Police at the SP’s office in Gomati, demanding swift action and immediate arrest of all culprits.
Meanwhile, the victim’s husband told reporters that Manna, along with Kinkar Das, Litan Das, Diptanu Das, and Akash Sarkar, was responsible for his wife’s death.
The case continues to unfold, with police under pressure to ensure justice amid rising political tension in the state.
