Agartala, Nov 5 : Police have seized 875 bottles of banned Eskuf cough syrup, estimated to be worth around Rs 10 lakh in the black market, and arrested two persons during a late-night raid in Tripura's Nabagram Chowmuhani area, officials said on Thursday.

The seizure was made by a team from the Airport Police Station during a special operation conducted on the basis of specific intelligence inputs, they said.

The police team raided the residences of two suspects, identified as Shubhankar Saha and Dipankar Saha, under the jurisdiction of the Airport Police Station.

During searches at the premises, officers recovered 875 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup, allegedly stored for illegal distribution, police sources said.

The estimated black-market value of the seized consignment is around Rs 10 lakh, making it a significant narcotics-related seizure in the area, they added.

Both suspects were arrested following the recovery and brought to the police station for questioning.

A case has been registered against them under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and further legal proceedings have been initiated, officials said.

Police have launched an investigation to ascertain the source of the seized cough syrup and establish the possible links of the arrested persons with the illegal pharmaceutical trade.

Investigators are also examining whether the consignment was part of a wider drug trafficking network operating across state borders.

Officials suspect that the cough syrup was intended for diversion into the illegal market, where pharmaceutical products containing controlled substances are often misused for non-medical and recreational purposes.

The police are questioning the arrested persons to gather information about the procurement, transportation and intended distribution of the consignment.

The operation is part of the ongoing efforts by Tripura Police to curb narcotics-related activities and prevent the diversion of pharmaceutical products for illicit consumption.

Police said further arrests and seizures cannot be ruled out as the investigation progresses.
