Agartala, Nov 5 : The Tripura government has initiated a strategic partnership with IIT Kharagpur to modernise higher education, strengthen research capabilities and equip students with skills required in emerging technology sectors, officials said.
A Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed between the state's Higher Education Department and IIT Kharagpur during a visit by a delegation led by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman to the premier institute on October 28.
The delegation included Higher Education Secretary Vikash Singh, Director of Higher Education Animesh Debbarma and other senior officials. IIT Kharagpur was represented by its Director Prof Suman Chakraborty, senior professors, deans and industry partners.
The proposed collaboration, aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, seeks to promote academic excellence, innovation-driven learning, research and skill-based education while improving students' employability.
A major component of the partnership is the proposed establishment of a Centre for Advanced Learning, Research and Innovation in Tripura under the academic guidance and technical mentorship of IIT Kharagpur.
The centre will focus on emerging technological disciplines, including Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Robotics, Internet of Things (IoT), Drone Technology and Geospatial Sciences.
Officials said the initiative would provide students access to advanced learning opportunities in fields that are increasingly shaping global industries.
The collaboration is also expected to strengthen Tripura Technical University through curriculum reforms, faculty development, laboratory expansion, research infrastructure, academic governance and accreditation-related support.
Another key area of cooperation will be the promotion of skill and vocational education in government degree colleges. The two sides are exploring industry-oriented courses, practical training modules, internships and employment-linked programmes to improve students' workplace readiness.
The agreement also envisages capacity-building initiatives for educators through faculty mentoring and a Train-the-Trainer model, allowing teachers in Tripura to benefit from IIT Kharagpur's academic expertise.
Officials said the partnership would help connect the state's higher education institutions with advanced research and technological expertise, creating opportunities for students and faculty members.
The initiative is expected to contribute to building a competitive and innovation-oriented higher education ecosystem in Tripura, while preparing its youth to take advantage of emerging opportunities in science, technology and industry.
