Agartala, Nov 7:The Tripura government has constituted two committees to examine land-related issues and educational reforms in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), following discussions with Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

The Revenue Department issued a notification on November 6, constituting a committee to examine various land-related issues within the autonomous council area.

The committee will be convened by the Secretary of the Tribal Welfare Department, while the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TTAADC will serve as a member.

Other members include the Secretaries of the Home and Revenue departments, Additional Secretary of the Revenue Department, Director of Land Records and Settlement, Principal Officer of Land Records and Settlements, TTAADC, and Principal Officer (Law), TTAADC.

Welcoming the decision, Debbarma said in a social media post that the formation of the joint committee was agreed upon during discussions with the concerned authorities.

He said the demand for land rights was aimed at protecting the identity of indigenous people, safeguarding their future and securing the rights of coming generations, and was not directed against anyone.

"Dialogue, mutual understanding and cooperation must guide this process," he said, stressing the need to consult all stakeholders and address their concerns.

In a separate notification issued on November 6, the Education (School) Department constituted another committee to examine the merger of schools with very low enrolment under TTAADC into quality residential schools and rationalisation of teachers in the autonomous council area.

The committee will be convened by the Secretary of the School Education Department. Its members include the TTAADC CEO, Secretary of the Home Department, Directors of Elementary Education and SCERT, Additional CEO (Education), TTAADC, and Principal Officer (Education), TTAADC.

Debbarma also welcomed the initiative, describing the establishment of quality residential schools across the council area as an important step towards improving educational opportunities for children.

He said residential schools had been among the key demands placed before the state and Central governments during discussions over the past two years.

Emphasising the need for better infrastructure and quality learning environments, he said children in the tribal areas should have opportunities to compete at the highest levels.

The two notifications came shortly after the Village Committee (VC) elections, in which the BJP and Tipra Motha contested jointly following an intervention by the BJP's central leadership to improve coordination between the two allies.

The parties had joined hands ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and subsequently signed a tripartite agreement, popularly known as the Tiprasa Accord. Its implementation has remained a key political demand of Tipra Motha in recent years.
